Cape Feare Season 5 - Episode 2 | October 7, 1993 One of my all-time favorite episode from childhood! This was definitely my favorite episode up to this point. This is mostly a parody of Marty ScoreSaysHe parody of Cape Fear, which I literally never saw before maybe a year ago (Fun Fact: I have spent most of my life never having seen a single Marty movie. Not on purpose, but there came a point where I realized I somehow managed to never see a single one well into adulthood, and this revelation DID *sorta* make me resistant to seeing any, for no other perverse reason than it was a mildly unique trait I had; I broke my cherry on Goodfellas in the last few years... pretty good!!). I realize watching this now, Sideshow Bob really turns a corner here, officially becoming a revenge-fueled homicidal maniac, intent on murdering Bart just out of pure hatred. The classic era of the show tends to have him go back and forth in the severity of his villany, even appearing reformed at certain points. But this is the Sideshow Bob that we see during the post-classic episodes; he’s almost always cartoonishly homicidal, almost always trying to murder Bart. Even if that’s not what the episode is about, it’s always alluded to as if it’s fall-back position. This episode is pretty funny, but it’s not as funny as I remember. I think I liked how gag-heavy this one is, because in the early 90s I was obsessed with spoof movies. Take the last scene, and if you really wanna go deep, listen to the audio commentary for it on DVD. This was actually the final episode produced for season 4 and held-over. So, reportedly a lot of the gags that wound up in this show were typical of the type of gags that were regularly put in the storyboards and promptly deleted by producers seeking to keep the show grounded. The final scene where Bob performs for Bart’s final request, we see Bart holding a Playbill and a mysterious pair of flesh-colored hands hand Bob a bouquet of flowers from off-camera: two impossibilities that at this point in the show would never have made it. I seem to recall Matt Groening saying that everyone was tired and the more privileged members of the Simpsons staff went home early while the animators went buck wild without anyone to reign them in. Another thing about this show was that it ran short. The couch gag is the give-away, but there are so many gags with limited animation in this that may or may not have been created after the episode’s first record: Lisa receives a pen-pal letter from a third-world country experiencing a coup. The scene is accomplished with voice-over while the camera slowly zooms in on Lisa’s mostly-static, but concerned-looking face. Grandpa rambles on, and it just seems like a lengthened scene with recycled animation. And the gag that might be the most memorable of all: Bob steps on a lot of rakes. This scene goes on forever, and it’s really funny. But it goes on so long that my wife left the room during it and thought I paused the show for her. Anyway, this episode is super funny, and I’ll always love it. But it also makes e think of some moron on twitter who tried to meme the joke where somebody in the court remarks “no one who speaks german could be an evil man” with that screen and quote and adding “ain’t you heard of hitler tho?”, as if the show wasn’t making that joke already. Part of me wishes I didn’t limit the B-SODE to cartoons, so I could use that Fresh Prince of Bel-Air episode where Will is playing poker with his friends and tells a story about how he and his family were put in the witness relocation program and got tracked down by a scary mobster, only to reveal the whole story was just a gag. The punchline of the show is that jazzy jeff puts on a rubber mask of the scary villain and spooks Will at the end of the episode, which is bullshit because it’s impossible for there to be photographical specificity in a fake story Will was telling. Pissed me off. I guess I found a way to complain about it. Good.

OSRR: 2031

so i got up this morning and went with lisa to get renee and her friend and i brought them all home and to meetings and i got to go get my nails done with kimmy! it was really relaxing and exactly what i needed. and then a huge group came in and the peace was disrupted. welp.

but anyway, after that we went and got lunch where i proceeded to get explosive diarrhea from the ranch dressing i had with the fried pickles, even though they were delicious.

we also went to fredericks pastries where i got a bunch of things, stopped at home, and then went back to their apartment to play risk! i'd never played the regular version before, but i wound up taking more than half of the world over and that was fun, but i realized both kimmy and nathon were getting frustrated so i said "please kick my ass" and they preoceeded to take all of my territories away from me except for two in australia, which i wound up taking back! by the end of it, i had all four territories in australia and TWENTY TROOPS in the one place people could come in. i said, "it's just a deterrent. i started this game with three-quarters of australia, and i'm gonna end it with all of it." and i did.

and now i'm back down at the con, and i brought my dad and my brother cupcakes and joel and john mini cheesecakes, and i sat and did. homework which went surprisingly well, despite me not understanding most of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

but they wound up playing a game at midnight too, and i hung around because it was a fun group and it wound up being an awesome module. a lot of goofing around. good people make for good games.

and now i'm in bed with joel, listening to the waves crashing in john's white noise, and i'm exhausted. sleepy time and cuddles.

Personally I hate it when a woman rags on a man for comedy when we all know that if a guy were to do the same he’d be instantly hated for it

Eg eveybody loves Raymond (the whole damn show)

Simpson’s (Lisa mostly but Marge ain’t a saint either)

Friends (both were at fault for the break up)

I think it why I kinda like vintage sitcoms like cheers or I love Lucy were it’s a free for all of slapstick

It’s a double standard thing equal opportunity equal reward equal consequence the last of which I think is sorely lacking in a lot of tv shows especially those aimed at a younger audience both men and women can be right and wrong neither is infallible we all have foibles

But out there are two things (both made by Disney in fact) where the man actually kind of deserves it most of the time and the other where he really needs to be called out on his shit

A: Goof Troop bloody Pete he’s a sleazebag and every time his wife yells at jphim I concede that he deserves it

B: Disney descendants - Beast what I want to know is what the hell was going through his fur addled brain when he decide “oh I know. I’ll resurrect all the dead villains that plagued our land and dump them on a hellhole slum of an island where they can mingle and breed this can’t go wrong in any way”

I would not be adverse to to him being cursed again but this time leave out the collateral damage or at the very least have all the vks take a slice out of his ego or something cause frankly his son is a better king then him and the kids on 16

... WOW. You certainly had a lot to say about Mutiny!  I appreciate you taking the time to type that out and let me know how you felt about it!  So let me take a little time to reciprocate. :3

Firstly, this story takes place in the early 90s - the spring of 1992, to be precise.  Goof Troop for the SNES didn’t get released until 1993. ;) Addams Family is a super-fun game anyway - you should try it sometime!

I’m glad you felt so strongly about Mike, Faith, and especially Violet!  Theirs is a complicated relationship, one that won’t be solved with the help of screeching animatronics.  The fact that you feel very much one way is awesome!

The thing is, these kids have all been close friends as far back as they can remember.  They’ve spent YEARS as friends, with some arguing and scrapping, sure, but these usually got resolved in the same day, and without any serious injury.

This time, it’s different.  As far as the parents know, Violet’s attack came completely out of nowhere.  This is their first sign that Violet’s anger is worse than anyone thought.  Of course Lisa and Carl are angry, but they’re restraining themselves until they can get Violet’s side of the story, and work things out with her parents, who are also their friends.  Depending on how that offscreen meeting between Lisa Schmidt and the Quinlans is going, don’t you worry, Violet won’t be seeing Mike OR the others for a very long time.  

And besides, Carl and Lisa aren’t Violet’s parents.  The Quinlans have more direct responsibility for her, so their reactions to the situation will be VERY different.

Now, as for the swearing.  Yeah, I get how it can bother you, but in case you haven’t figured it out yet - I’m not comfortable at swearing.  Even with the ONE story I wrote and posted that HAD fully written curse words, I had to type them out one letter at a time, out of order.  That’s just ME, and not meant to be a self-righteous jab at others, like yourself, who are more comfortable with cursing.

However, I understand that my characters are much more at ease with it, so consider the jumbled s#!& a compromise between writer and character.  They ARE cussing, you can sound it out in your head if you like, or copy and paste my stories and put the swears in yourself, if that helps.

Also, that means I use alternatives - and so do these kids, especially right now, when they’re around 14 years old and just getting into high school.  I recall there being a definite shift in language-usage between middle and high school, so to reflect that experience, the curses won’t be flying all willy-nilly until then.

Besides, you saw Faith’s reprimand, right?  She’s been the group’s language filter for ages. ;)

And speaking of - Faith still has a lot of her own feelings to work out.  She tried to make things work with Violet, not just out of pity, but because she was exploring possibilities for herself too, and of COURSE, because she liked Violet a lot.  This turn of events has her questioning what it means to be “in love”.  All part and parcel of growing up!  No one said it’d be easy!

The Best of Canon Companions Tracks 232-242

[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the Mansfield Park, Fire Emblem Tellius Series, Fire Emblem 7, Zootopia, One Flew Over the Cuckoos' Nest, and Tales of Symphonia] 1. "Vacation" by the Go-Go's Works represented: Mansfield Park Characters represented: Fanny to Edmund This song pretty aptly represents the part where Fanny goes to live with her birth family for a while and, while gone, realizes that she loves Edmund and can't stay away from him.  This is also a great song and about my favorite characters from one of my favorite books. 2. "Like a Surgeon" by Weird Al Yankovic Works represented: The Simpsons Characters represented: Dr. Nick This song isn't plot-important in the slightest, so the main reason that it made it onto the Best of Canon Companions (and Canon Companions in the first place) is because it's just that relevant to Dr. Nick, a doctor whose qualifications are... questionable to say the least.  Additionally, it's a catchy and funny song and about a good show. 3. "Right Behind You" by James Durbin Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Goof Troop Universe Characters represented: Ike to Soren; Sylvia to Goofy This song is a great song about trust, and it's especially relevant in the chorus to Ike and Soren and during the verses to Sylvia and Goofy, but emotionally it works well for both.  Additionally, it's somewhat plot important, about some of my favorite characters, and about two of my three favorite works ever. 4. "Pardon Me" by Weezer Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; El Goonish Shive; Fire Emblem 7 Characters represented: Nasir; Abraham; Renault In every case this song is being narrated by a truly contrite person who has done some terrible things in the past.  In addition to being relevant, it's plot important in at least the two cases where it's about one of my favorite works, and it's a great song. 5. "Dreams of an Absolution" by Remix Factory Works represented: Sonic the Hedgehog Characters represented: Silver Full disclosure: I haven't actually played Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 so most of my opinions of this song's relevance came from trying to learn about Silver on a wiki, but from what I understand it's actually a really good song both for the plot and for Silver's character.  Also, I like the song and the character regardless. 6. "Savages (Part 2)" from Pocahontas Works represented: Zootopia Characters represented: Gazelle and the panicked masses Here, Gazelle is narrating Pocahontas' parts, where she has to try to prevent the strife from developing further.  Meanwhile, in the background, the predators and the prey are fighting with each other.  I love the song as well as the movie it represents here, and it's very plot-important. 7. "She's So High" by Tal Bachman Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; The Simpsons Characters represented: Geoffrey about Elincia; Milhouse about Lisa The sentiment to this song is more relevant to Geoffrey, if not for the orphaned etymology of the historical and mythological references, but in both cases the song is narrated by a guy who has a crush on a girl whom he thinks is much better than he is.  I like all the characters represented, both works, and the song. 8. "Billy" by James Blunt Works represented: One Flew Over the Cuckoos' Nest Characters represented: Billy Of course the name is the same, but in this particular case, it's much more than the name: there's a story of having had sex which he wasn't supposed to, the huge amount of regret, and him, ahem, "leaving".  If that wasn't enough on its own to get it on the playlist, the song itself is great, as is Billy himself, and the work. 9. "I Will Follow You into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; The Simpsons Characters represented: Soren to Ike; Smithers to Mr. Burns Yet another lopsided duplicate, while it's more-or-less relevant to Smithers and Mr. Burns, the song is much more relevant to Ike and Soren, with the only noticeable problems being specific names--Soren was taught in the school of hard knocks, vowed to never leave Ike regardless of what happened, travels the world with him, and eventually sets off with him.  It's also much, much more plot-important, the work is much better, and the characters are better too on that side.  It's also a really good song. 10. "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas Works represented: Tales of Symphonia Characters represented: Kratos to Lloyd and Lloyd to Kratos This lovely song is for the point in Tales of Symphonia where Kratos says his final goodbyes to Lloyd.  At this point their relationship has reconciled and Kratos wants nothing more than for Lloyd to be victorious.  I love the song as well as the characters and the game. 11. "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd Works represented: Fire Emblem Tellius Series; Hey Arnold!; Cheers Characters represented: Brom; Stinky; Woody I love all three works represented? Check.  One of my favorite characters from two of the works? Check.  The song is awesome? Check.  But even if two of those things weren't true, as a major character theme in two places, it would be considered plot important, even if it wasn't such an apt descriptor for the simple, kind country folk.

Episode #33

WHAT THIS?

The War of the Simpsons Season 2 - Episode 20 | May 2, 1991 This is the episode where Homer is bad boy and Marge makes him go to a fishing lake but says “you are not allowed to fish in the fishing lake!” meanwhile Bart and Lisa have a party! This might be Homer at his least likable during the classic era of the show. Here his major transgression is looking down Maude Flander’s dress but he does it in a genuinely gross, harassing way. Homer’s lack of impulse control is what makes him kinda likable, but here we see him not only not resist staring at Maude’s cleavage but also persist in making her bend down lower and lower while she is clearly uncomfortable. I think Homer is more likely to look at cleavage and immediately make an ass of himself, either via some pratfall or some buffoonish remark that he’d instantly try to recover from. Here he is drunk as a skunk and shamelessly getting his jollies. It’s genuinely creepy! I’m not saying this as a critique, actually. It gives the episode some weight. Of all the times Homer did something villainous wrong and had to make things right because of it, this is one of the more uniquely believable transgressions.

THE B-SODE:

Duckman: "Gripes of Wrath" Season 1 - Episode 3 | March 19, 1994 Matching B-SODES in the early 90s for relationship-themed episodes is tricky. So the thing connecting this to the episode of The Simpsons is that they both briefly parody Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Anyway this is a memorable early episode of Duckman which reaches for broad satire about society in general. You know, maybe there was an episode of Goof Troop where Goofy catches a fish or something that I could have used instead, but I wanna watch Duckman. Ducks > Dogs any day.
